“Love Story” (1970) was my mother’s favorite movie when she was young. This was the first movie I watched that was about romantic love. Actually, I was too young to understand the entire story however the theme song “Where Do I Begin” stuck in my head for years. Later when I became a teenager, I saw this movie one more time. I was deeply touched by the love story and shed tears just as it did to my mother.
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” – the famous quote at the end of the movie. This had me think quite a lot about love, family, friends and myself. That is the time when I started to wonder about the question “what is love?” time and time again. “True love” is rare to come by but it is possible when it just takes two souls to believe the same.
However, about one year later, I suddenly found out there was a sequel to this movie named “Oliver’s Story“ (1978). What!!!!!????? I was in shock. This was such a betrayal in my view. A true love could only last merely eight years! After that, another question started to linger in my mind – “how long can a love story last?” Not long after, my parents went through their divorce. How ironic and how realistic about a love story can be in real life.
If one watches these two movies (or only one of them) at a young age, I think these romantic stories can definitely have some influence on his/her perspective about love. These movies should be marked as not-suitable for kids and young adults.
| This is a great love song… Lyrics Where do I begin To tell the story of how great a love can be The sweet love story that is older than the sea The simple truth about the love she brings to me Where do I start With her first hello She gave new meaning to this empty world of mine There’d never be another love, another time She came into my life and made the living fine She fills my heart She fills my heart with very special things With angels’ songs, with wild imaginings She fills my soul with so much love That anywhere I go I’m never lonely With her around, who could be lonely I reach for her hand, it’s always there How long does it last Can love be measured by the hours in a day I have no answers now but this much I can say I know I’ll need her ’till the stars all burn away And she’ll be there How long does it last Can love be measured by the hours in a day I have no answers now but this much I can say I know I’ll need her ’till the stars all burn away And she’ll be there |
